Moving to a new place can be both exciting and stressful. Even if you’re super organized, packing might not be your idea of a fun time. And if you’re not organized, well, then you might be dreading the moving day. As experts in the field, we at Rapid Stor have written down five tips to help get you ready for your moving day. These will help you plan ahead and stay organized, so you can enjoy a stress-free move to your new home.

Tip #1: Have a packing schedule
Packing is one of the most crucial phases of moving. Organizing items based on common functions, room use, or other factors makes it easier to keep track of your belongings during transport and unpack at your new place. Start packing using a room-to-room packing schedule, so you are not extremely overwhelmed.

Tip #2: Keep your packing material ready
A few days before the big move, stock up on supplies. The last thing you want is to have to make a run to the store while you’re packing moving boxes or making sure everything is out of the house. Order or purchase box cutters, adhesive bandages, permanent markers, packing tape, paper towels, and garbage bags. Find out if the moving company of your choice has moving boxes and packing material for purchase.

Tip #3: Label all boxes
Labeling boxes when moving home is probably the most underestimated task in anyone’s moving checklist. Label all boxes based on the room and whether they are heavy or fragile. It will help direct the movers in locating the new home for your belongings and handle with extra care when they are unloading the truck.

Tip #4: Finish food you don’t want to carry
Two or three weeks before your move, use up all the food items you do not want to take with you. Grab a notepad and pen, and write down your inventory. After figuring out what you have and how long each item is going to stay fresh, you’ll need to decide what to do with all of it. From your list, highlight high priority items like perishables that need to be eaten asap and low priority items. Eat the perishables as everything else can be transported fairly easily.

Tip #5: Change your mailing address
In addition to the obvious moving basics like acquiring boxes and packing supplies and renting a truck, or hiring professional movers, you’ll also want to make sure you’re notifying the right people and places about your move. It’s better to do this earlier rather than later to avoid potential hassles like missed bills or service lapses. Change your mailing address within your local post office two weeks before the day of your move to get it out of the way.
